Childhood Fears

Anger is based on fear and many of us have fear, or anxiety, because of incidents in our childhood. The fear can burst into anxiety sometimes, when something- can be a minor incidents- triggers bouts of emotion.
My friend Ron has had therapy which he tells me works for him. He visualizes the anger as a part of himself thats separate from who he is. Before it has a chance to overwhelm him he sternly instructs it to leave the room- to go down “into the basement.” Lately I’ve had a few panic attacks seemingly for no reason. I realize I’ve suffered from underlying fear all my life. I was sexually molested and threatened at the age of 4 and I believe that was the root. Anyway I have taken up Ron’s tactics, envisionizing my fear as my much younger self whom I call Little Doris. I hug her and tell her I will protect her and then send her “out to play” It really helps me. I think I can manage stress better before it turns into anxiety or fear. My prayers are for all the little children who are still being abused and/or neglected.
