“Lillies Of The Field”

Filmed in 1963

Back when

We still believed in the

Goodness of others

That a young black man

Brash, confident, adept

With a toolbox

In his car

Could become a gift

From God

To a sternfaced

Catholic abyss

And four black-robed sisters

Lured to America

To spread the Word.

Impoverished, unable to speak

The language

Eight thousand miles

From home.

A young Sidney Poitier

Entrapped

In a psychological battle

Between self-gratification

And the convictions

Of a fiercely determined

Woman.

‘Twas a lovely movie.
