Songs For My Mother by Bruce Ray

A few years ago my son sent me an email of songs he had written especially for me. These are my favorites

Tenderness

Know that reality is a dream
The greatest power is forgiveness
To touch the pale stars that gleam
Feel all things with
Tenderness

A strong man cuts himself down
He stands apart from togetherness
And his poverty is a bitter sound
Feel all things with
Tenderness

Touch the skin of true gratitude
Emulate God who is generous
Take sweet love as your food
Feel all things with
Tenderness

And so useless knowledge is vain
This is no more than cleverness
So we know with the heart’s pain
Feel all things with
Tenderness

The soldier who’s never fallen
Is ever frozen in his bitterness
Will he hear if love is calling?
Feel all things with
Tenderness

The Sacred Self

And will we speak of heaven
Of dreams so chaste and pure?
The moon of tears has risen
Will the sacred self
Yet undure?

Will we stand against a world
That’s not so wise and sure
To be perfect as a pale pearl?
Will the sacred self
Yet undure?

And will we save or condemn
When the free get so fewer?
And if the dream of time ends
Will the sacred self
Yet undure?

And we look into the well to see
If the waters have been stirred
And so we wait for a miracle
Will the sacred self
Yet undure?

Oh, see the dove of pale white
And see a black winged bird
Move the day -know the night
Will the sacred self
Yet undure?

Oh, and if the soul is a virgin
And by grace it’s conferred
How the mind is it’s servant
Will the sacred self
Yet undure?

True Grace

And God has left His tracks
On the stone of flesh and skin
Life bleeds through the cracks
That’s where true grace
Get’s in

And so the spirit -how it works
The thread of power it spins
And the wounds of time hurt
That’s where true grace
Get’s in

Oh, I breathe the sour air and
So I can feel the holes within
But will I yet come to repair?
That’s where true grace
Get’s in

In the beginning just a flaw
In this world of original sin
In the breaking of the law
That’s where true grace
Get’s in

And if I throw down the dice
Every time I lose and I win
But it’s all just the price
That’s where true grace
Get’s in

And so the altar is crumbling
For the idol has been broken
There’s a tear in everything
That’s where true grace
Get’s in

Fountain of Tears

Your heart is open like the sun
Love comes to make you wise
Many strands entwined as one
I see a fountain of tears
In your eyes

And if the dream of time is done
There’s a light that never dies
Together the bright colours run
I see a fountain of tears
In your eyes

Oh, and sweetest sorrow is won
We will make no more good’byes
For the strings are silver spun
I see a fountain of tears
In your eyes

The colours blue -number is none
I call down the stars from the skies
Like the time just before the dawn
I see a fountain of tears
In your eyes

Queen of Night -you’re shunned
By the men of knowledge who rise
To meet the sun and speak of one
I see a fountain of tears
In your eyes

Tower Song

The lights in the sky are flashing
While a pilgrim walks so alone
Waves of the sea are crashing
Go to the tower of
Melodious tones

The music in my soul is ringing
I feel the rhythm in my bones
The songbirds sweetly singing
Go to the tower of
Melodious tones

And pearls in the sky are shining
And the wind of time softly moans
While grey’haired men are dying
Go to the tower of
Melodious tones

While the storehouse is opening
The seeds of wisdom are sown
Stars are naked and trembling
Go to the tower of
Melodious tones

Children of night are dreaming
Climb stairs to the moon’s dome
Where subtle light is gleaming
Go to the tower of
Melodious tones

And there’s a space in heaven
Bells ring with tongues of stone
And now the pure spirit is rising
Go to the tower of
Melodious tones

In the places where light comes in
The sword of my poetry is honed
And it would cut the soul from skin
Go to the tower of
Melodious tones

The Dream

Oh, the days and nights are long
If you plan your time and scheme
How you’ve forgotten the song
Be alive! -for life
Is the dream!

Oh, the subtle moon reflects light
Mud at the bottom of the stream
You can’t see it on the heights
Be alive! -for life
Is the dream!

And it is natural as your breathing
It’s like the milk with it’s cream
It’s like a pattern you’re weaving
Be alive! -for life
Is the dream!

Merge with the waves of the sea
Feel these variations on a theme
Be loyal to the vision that’s free
Be alive! -for life
Is the dream!

And if the moon and stars gleam
And the sun casts down its beams
Renounce fate and what it brings
Be alive! -for life
Is the dream!

So Many Friends

To call yourself poet and prophet
As you stand by the river’s bend
The rim of the glass is encrusted
I am alone but I have
So many friends

Oh, and a lament I will sing to you
I have no silver and gold to spend
Caught in a mystery without clues
I am alone but I have
So many friends

Oh, and the fabric of time I sew
As the plough of heaven I mend
In a garden of thoughts that grow
I am alone but I have
So many friends

Oh, and I was taught by the angels
And so now my freedom I defend
Against any stranger and saviour
I am alone but I have
So many friends

Oh, as I worship a God of circles
Not square rules that we attend
Oh, and if truth comes as a riddle
I am alone but I have
So many friends
