Not sure if FB will let me publish this post? It was on the news tonight that they have come up with a new mor humane method of implementing the death penalty in some US states. The whole concept creeps me out. I remember when the death penalty was removed from the justice system in Canada.
I have always been against the death penalty because, in my mind, it is totally immoral for civilized human beings to sanctify the cold-blooded taking of any human life.
But should we, as a society, house, clothe and feed those who kill and maim other human beings ? These people (not all of them) are unable to control their impulses and perhaps even enjoy hurting their victims. They cannot ever be let out on the street.
But some of these people may have moments of guilt and regret. And they may even prefer death, to being locked up for the rest of their lives.
We now have a legal alternative in Canada for those suffering from a painful, incurable illness, where suicide can be legally considered. It is a carefully considered arrangement between a patient who is in huge, overwhelming physical distress, and his doctor.
Anyway, though these violent incurable offenders do not deserve any respect from anyone, could they not be offered a choice ( after a number of years and careful consideration) between having a doctor assisted suicide and a continuing on of their life sentence.
Just a thought…..
